The TerrraTerrre project addresses a significant environmental and economic challenge in the construction industry: the mismanagement of excavated soil, which is often treated as waste rather than a valuable resource. In Switzerland alone, 40 to 60 million tons of soil are excavated each year, generating considerable carbon emissions due to transportation and disposal practices. The current practice of discarding these materials contributes to environmental degradation and resource wastage, while new materials are continuously extracted, further exacerbating environmental impacts.
The lack of awareness and infrastructure for the reuse of excavated soil presents a major barrier to the development of a circular economy in the construction sector. This project seeks to change the way soil is perceived and handled, positioning it as a reusable resource rather than waste.
Soils excavated each year in Switzerland
The TerrraTerrre project proposes a comprehensive solution by promoting the reuse of excavated materials through a digital platform that facilitates exchanges between construction sites with surplus soil and those in need. The project aims to minimize waste, reduce CO2 emissions, and foster sustainable practices in the construction industry. The platform, already in its pilot phase, connects contractors, landscapers, farmers, and public authorities, allowing them to trade soil and other reusable materials. This initiative is designed to not only reduce transportation and disposal costs but also to create a network of actors committed to sustainability. By scaling the platform, the project aims to extend its reach across Switzerland, providing a sustainable alternative to the current wasteful practices.

Additionally, TerrraTerrre emphasizes education and awareness, offering workshops, seminars, and social media campaigns to engage professionals and the public. The project also envisions the creation of a green certification system, recognizing companies that demonstrate exemplary practices in sustainable soil management. By facilitating partnerships and encouraging knowledge sharing, the project creates a robust foundation for long-term impact. Through these efforts, TerrraTerrre is driving the transition to a more circular economy in the construction industry, aligning economic growth with environmental responsibility.
